Chapter Twelve

Cade

By the time everyone was satisfied that enough had been done and would be done over the next few days to send a real message to the hate group the sun was coming up. I spent the first night after meeting my true-mate talking war and prevention tactics. There was only one thing I wanted more than to flop into the bed of the mating moon house and sleep for a hundred years: Eston.

I dragged my exhausted feet back to his garden and then to the house he shared with his brothers. I almost knocked but tried the knob first.

“Don’t wake up the babies,” someone whispered from behind me.

It was Nicky, Eston’s brother, who was a witch.

“Go one,” he whispered. “I’m out to herb, but you go get some sleep. Just don’t wake up the babies or I won’t get to go.”

“Thanks, I’ll be quiet,” I yawned.

“Don’t yawn like that. They’re babies. Everything wakes them up this time of the morning,” Nicky said, the tiniest trace of laughter dancing on his words.

I wasn’t in the mood to talk to him. His resemblance to Eston only made me miss my mate more. I dragged myself inside and shut the door quietly behind me. Eston was out cold on the sofa as if he stayed up to wait for me. I lowered myself to the floor in front of the sofa and rested my cheek against his bare belly.

“Morning,” he yawned, and his soft fingers played through my hair.

“More like goodnight,” I chuckled.

“Your carrier and Sunny are in my bed. I thought they’d be more comfortable there. It’s quieter even if the bed is a bit smaller than they’re used to. I’m used to Nicky coming and going all hours of the night and day. They’re not.”

“My sire does that too,” I groaned softly.

“Did you guys get it worked out?” He asked.

“Maybe. Probably. Hopefully.”

“Do you want me to get up so you can sleep out here on the sofa? I’d say you could join Manny in his and Nicky’s bed but I don’t know how he’d feel about that.”

“How long have you slept?” I asked him.

“Only a few hours, but I’ll be okay. You can have the sofa.”

“No,” I shook my head.

“Alpha, you can’t sleep hunched over like that. You’ll get a crick in your neck. We can go back to the mating moon house.”

“Too far,” I shook my head.

“We could share the sofa, but I’d be on top of you.”

“Okay. That one. That choice,” I said, too tired to open my eyes. “The one where you stay with me and sleep.”

When I woke with the noon sunlight seeping in around the shades and curtains, I didn’t remember getting onto the sofa. I didn’t remember Eston settling down to cuddle me. He was right. He was pretty much on top of me while I stretched out on my back.

“Babies are at Adrian’s house,” Nicky whispered from somewhere beyond my line of sight.

“Huh?” I blinked.

“He was talking to me. Thanks, Nicky,” Eston yawned.
